April P. Carson, PhD, MSPH received her Bachelor of Science
degree in Microbiology from the University of Georgia and her
Master of Science in Public Health and Doctor of Philosophy
degrees in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. Dr. Carson’s graduate studies were supported by a
National Research Service Award (NRSA) and a graduate research
assistant supplement from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute (NHLBI). Currently, Dr. Carson is working on two
projects evaluating the diffusion of new therapies for prostate
cancer and changes in functional limitations among elderly
adults with diabetes. Dr. Carson has served as a primary author
or as a co-author on several publications that have appeared in
a variety of journals and she has worked with several large,
epidemiologic studies including the Atherosclerosis Risk in
Communities (ARIC) Study and the Life Course Socioeconomic
Status, Social Context, and Cardiovascular Disease (LC-SES)
Study and presented her findings at national conferences
sponsored by the American Heart Association. Dr. Carson’s
research interests are cardiovascular disease, sub-clinical
atherosclerosis, social epidemiology, and research ethics.
