Shaw-Duke Maternal and Infant Mortality Initiative: Interventions to Improve Outcomes Among Pregnant Medicaid Recipients

Project Period : September 30, 2005 - September 29, 2007
Funded By : Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Grant No. : 110CMS200040
Award : $250,000
PI : Daniel L. Howard, Ph.D.

The goal of the Shaw University and Duke University project is to: (1) carry out an educational intervention, with the participation of Healthcare Navigators, aimed at improving patient satisfaction and reducing adverse outcomes among pregnant Medicaid recipients at DUMC; (2) survey patients regarding their experiences of pregnancy care; and (3) study factors related to near misses. Mitigating the effects of patient factors, understanding the care received by patients, and identifying factors related to near misses could help reduce racial disparities in adverse maternal and infant outcomes for pregnant African American Medicaid recipients.
